Here are all of Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards 2023 GOTY nominations.
Geoff Keighley, the creator and host of the tenth annual Game Awards, has finally unveiled the 2023 nominations.
The category “Game of the Year” contains expected hits like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Baldur’s Gate III, as well as Capcom’s remake of Resident Evil 4. Starfield, Bethesda’s long-awaited sci-fi RPG, was conspicuously absent from the GOTY shortlist, with only one nomination across the board.
Alan Wake II, Spider-Man 2, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder are the other finalists for best game. Other notable nominees include Tour de Pizza’s Pizza Tower for best debut indie game and Lies of P for best visual direction.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Final Fantasy XVI were both nominated for best action game and best RPG, respectively.
Meanwhile, Starfield was only nominated for best RPG, with Microsoft’s first-party lineup completely absent except for Tango Gameworks’ Hi-Fi Rush, which was nominated for a slew of awards, including best action game.
It’s unclear whether such neutral posture will also apply to statements made by event presenters and winners.
Meghna Jayanth, a narrative designer on Thirsty Suitors and other games, was recently refused the chance to speak about the present Palestinian humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza at the 2023 Golden Joystick Awards in the United Kingdom.
The organisers stated that political statements were not authorised, prompting her to withdraw from the ceremony in protest.
The event’s host, The Last of Us voice actor Troy Baker, went on to deliver the award category without acknowledging the controversy.
The Golden Joystick Awards did not react to a request for comment, while The Game Awards did not respond when Kotaku inquired about a similar prohibition on political statements at its event.
Some have also urged Keighley to address the slew of video game studio layoffs and closures that have occurred this year.
Despite a record year for critically praised titles, Sony, Microsoft, Electronic Arts, and others have all reduced workforce.
The layoffs have impacted both large and small companies, including Bungie, the creator of Destiny 2, and Scavengers Studios, the creator of Season: A Letter to the Future. Keighley has previously acknowledged, however hazily, industry working conditions.
Following indignation at Activision Blizzard over sexual discrimination and harassment claims and a lawsuit, the host briefly mentioned “abuse, harassment, or predatory practise by anyone, including our online communities” at the event in 2021.
While the Game Awards are ostensibly a night dedicated to honouring creative achievements in the field of video games, they are mostly followed for significant new gaming announcements, trailers, and “world premieres.”
The event concludes Keighley’s year of showcases, which now includes Summer Game Fest and Gamescom Opening Night Live in addition to The Game Awards.
With the release of the Grand Theft Auto 6 official trailer slated for early December, many have speculated that Rockstar’s open-world sequel could make an unexpected debut during the show.
